Resilience and Leadership: 2025 MELC Award Recipient

Published: September 4, 2025

Languages and cultures connect us. They shape identity, build understanding, and create stronger communities. Each year, the Award for Leadership in Languages and Cultures (MELC Award) celebrates young South Australians who use their voices and leadership to champion diversity and inclusion.

In 2025, we proudly honoured Marzila Osmani, MELC Award Category 1 Recipient, from Thebarton Senior College for her languages, cultures, and multicultural youth advocacy.

A truly proud moment for Marzila (centre), receiving the Award from Her Excellency The Governor of South Australia at Government House.

“Receiving the MELC Award has been more than just recognition for me it’s the first step in a journey I’m deeply committed to. It reminded me that resilience, courage, and community spirit do make a difference. This Award has fuelled my passion even more – I don’t want to stop here. I want to work harder, speak louder, and stand taller not just for myself, but for every voice that has felt silenced.

“As a young woman who came to Australia seeking safety and opportunity, I carry with me the struggles and strength of that journey. I know what it means to rebuild, to hope again, and to believe in change. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to not only grow, but to give back. Through every project I take part in whether it’s leading youth programs, running cultural events, or advocating for women’s voices I aim to uplift others, especially those who have been overlooked”.

Youth Parliament of South Australia gave me the chance to amplify young voices and grow as a leader.

I dream of building an inclusive, diverse environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. I want to be someone who lifts not only herself but helps others rise too. Because when one of us grows, our whole community grows.

Sharing my story with the Rotary community, a moment where words became a bridge between cultures and understanding.

From receiving awards at Government House, to presenting at Youth Parliament and speaking at community events, Marzila continues to show the power of youth leadership in languages and cultures.
