In Australia, alarming statistics reveal a pressing crisis: one in five children under seventeen is missing out on school, one in four is battling mental health issues, and over 25,000 children are homeless despite seeking assistance. These figures underscore the urgent need for effective intervention. BackTrack Youth Works introduces a beacon of hope in a challenging landscape.
Founded in 2006 in Armidale by 2020 Australian Local Hero Bernie Shakeshaft, BackTrack Youth Works is making waves with its innovative approach to supporting at-risk youth. Shakeshaft, with his rich background as a jackaroo and expertise in Aboriginal tracking, has crafted a program that combines animal-assisted learning, agricultural training, and residential care to transform young lives.
This morning, Bernie Shakeshaft had the opportunity to present BackTrack’s pioneering methods to a notable assembly of leaders and advocates, including:
- Helen Connolly – Commissioner for Children and Young People SA
- Andrew Downs – Sliding Doors Foundation
- Grant Stevens APM LEM – Commissioner of Police
- David Wark – Operation Flinders Foundation
- Michael O’Connell AM APM – Alliance of NGO on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice
- Ivan Raymond, PhD – Life Buoyancy Institute Foundation
- Kelly Bunyon – Compass Catholic Community
- Shona Reid – Guardian for Children and Young People
Bernie’s vision for BackTrack is straightforward yet powerful: “Our mission at BackTrack is to keep kids alive, out of jail, and chasing their hopes and dreams. While the nation wrestles with issues like school disengagement, mental health, crime, unemployment, and social media pressures, we at BackTrack roll up our sleeves and tackle these problems head-on. We’re committed to breaking the cycle of disadvantage and providing a pathway to a better future.”
BackTrack’s approach is a testament to the power of holistic support. By integrating animal-assisted learning and agricultural skills into their programs, they offer young people not just skills but also a sense of purpose and belonging. The residential facility further supports their development, providing stability and a nurturing environment for growth.
The event, supported by the Commissioner for Children & Young People and the Sliding Doors Foundation, highlighted the importance of collaboration and networking in tackling youth issues. The collective effort of these organisations is crucial in amplifying the impact of initiatives like BackTrack.
As we move forward, it’s vital to continue supporting programs that offer tangible hope and transformation. BackTrack Youth Works exemplifies the kind of innovative, compassionate intervention needed to address the complex challenges faced by Australia’s vulnerable youth. Let’s unite in our support, championing these efforts and working together to create a brighter future for every young person in need. Visit the website to show your support for the Backtrack program.
