Edgar Agius OAM

A Civic leader and a Maltese Community Leader

Edgar joined the Maltese Guild of SA in 1974, serving as President from 1999 to 2007.
Currently and for the past 16 years, he has been President of the Maltese Community Council of SA heading a Community Council represented by all the Maltese community leaders in SA.

Elected to Local Government in 2001, Edgar is currently serving his seventh consecutive term of office as Councillor for the Beverley Ward City of Charles Sturt, having served as Deputy Mayor in 2007, 2010 and currently.

Acknowledged by all three tiers of Government for volunteer services in the community in general, Edgar has been awarded the following: 2001 Premiers Certificate of Appreciation; 2003 Centenary of Federation Medal from the Commonwealth of Australia for service to the Community; 2006 Medal of the Order of Australia for services rendered to Local Government and the Maltese Community; 2009 Governor’s Multicultural Awards Certificate for Outstanding Distinguished Service by an individual; 2010 Australian of the Year (Finalist) South Australian Local Hero Category.

In 2021 Edgar was appointed by the Minister for European and Foreign affairs (Malta) to the National Council for the Maltese Living Abroad here in Australia.

Edgar been serving as an Australia Day Council Ambassador since 2010. He has also served as a Justice of the Peace in and for the State of South Australia for many years.

When asked what motivates him, Edgar’s response is that he is passionate about giving back to the community, as he is grateful for the opportunities Australia has given him and his family.

Glyn Scott survived years of violence and sexual abuse – first as a child and later in her first marriage. In 2006, Glyn gave evidence to the Children in State Care Commission of Inquiry about her childhood experience of sexual abuse.
