Future-Focused Leadership and Growth at the Heart of Murray Bridge Forum.
On Wednesday 21 May, we hosted Our Collective Strength: Creating a Sustainable Future a Community Forum that brought together local government, business, industry leaders and engaged citizens for a forward-thinking dialogue on sustainability, leadership and regional resilience.
Presented by the Australia Day Council of South Australia in partnership with the Rural City of Murray Bridge (RCMB) and supported by Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland (RDAMR) and the Bridgeport Hotel the Forum highlighted the critical role regional communities play in shaping Australia’s sustainable future.
Keynote speakers included Barry Irvin AM, Executive Chairman of Bega Group, and Tim Jarvis AM, 2024 SA Australian of the Year. They were joined by Heather Barclay, CEO of the Rural City of Murray Bridge, and Jan Chorley, CEO of the Australia Day Council of SA, each offering a unique and compelling perspective on community innovation, economic transformation, climate adaptation and the opportunities for regional growth.
Under the guidance of presenter Jennie Lenman, the discussion navigated pressing challenges and emerging opportunities across the sustainability landscape from climate adaptation to circular economy innovation.
Speakers shared insights on leadership, innovation, economic and community sustainability, as well as climate change, biodiversity, and the future vision for Murray Bridge. The forum aimed to inspire partnerships, build capacity, and support the region’s growth, wellbeing and lifestyle. It also provided a platform for sharing best practices and encouraging open dialogue strengthening the network of changemakers already active across the Murraylands.
Mayor Wayne Thorley framed the forum as a vital step in strengthening community resilience:
“This is a unique chance for our community, not only to hear from national leaders, but to be part of a bigger conversation about our future. It’s about learning from others, making connections and working together to build a stronger, more sustainable Murray Bridge.”
The forum explored not only ideas but practical actions that can be taken at the local level to build long-term sustainability. It provided a space for reflection and renewal, where community members could engage directly with thought leaders, ask questions, and consider how to apply global solutions to local challenges.
Jan Chorley CEO, Australia Day Council of South Australia reflected on the value of strong partnerships and local leadership:
“Partnering with the Rural City of Murray Bridge to deliver this event was an opportunity to honour the community’s commitment to sustainability and leadership. It’s a powerful reminder that regional partnerships are key to building a resilient and inclusive future.” Jan Chorley
Jan encouraged attendees to nominate outstanding individuals for the 2026 Australian of the Year and Citizen of the Year Awards recognising those who are already leading change in their communities and setting an example for others. https://australiadaysa.com.au/australian-of-the-year-awards-2/
As the forum drew to a close, the energy in the room spoke volumes. Conversations continued long after the formalities had ended, as attendees networked, exchanged ideas, and reflected on what a sustainable and connected future for Murray Bridge could look like.
