Bringing Communities Together: The Power of Storytelling, Culture, and Reflection

Gathering on Kaurna land, we reflected on this great country. Through the lens of our migrant and refugee story and our ancestral connection to culture, we honoured the depth and richness of our shared history. We raised our flags, symbolising our diverse and inclusive culture, and were captivated by the vibrancy and brilliance of the layering of our stories—whether we were born here or are new citizens. – Jan Chorley, ADCSA CEO

Over 20,000 people experienced Aus lights on the River which featured incredible display of colour, music, flag raising, children’s activities, and stunning light displays, that brought us together to honour and respect this great nation and its people.

A spectacular parade of music, dance and colour made its way across the River Torrens/Karrawirra Parri Footbridge into Elder Park/Tarntanya Wama. Drumming groups, creating a powerful rhythm that united drummers and the crowd, setting the tone for a vibrant evening.

Emceed by Rosie Panetta, the Official Ceremony began with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Mickey O’Brien. John Schumann performed his love song to the Flinders Ranges, “If I Close My Eyes”, and the iconic Australian bush ballad Waltzing Matilda. These performances were accompanied by the Adelaide Youth Orchestra conducted by Jessica Manning, and the contemporary a cappella group, the Festival Statesman Chorus, under the musical direction of Dr Julian Ferraretto.

Community speakers inspired the audience with powerful personal stories.

Erfanullah Abidi, founder of Afghan Girls Underground, shared his journey as a refugee and highlighted the struggles of Afghan women and girls seeking to escape the oppressive rules of the Taliban. He discussed their efforts to attend underground schools in pursuit of freedom.

2024 South Australian of the Year, Tim Jarvis AM is an environmental scientist, author, and adventurer. Tim, shared work in conservation, urging the community to take actionable steps towards sustainability and preserving the planet for future generations.

The Rotunda was transformed into a stunning ‘Welcome Lantern,’ showcasing the moving AUSSIE poster art series by Peter Drew, this showcased the evening’s themes of unity and reflection.

Aus Lights for Kids included captivating storytelling of Australia’s unique flora and fauna, an inflatable theatre bringing native animals to life, face painting, roving performers and interactive arts and crafts workshops, for children of all ages.

The night concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display.

Aus Lights on the River 2025 was assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council and the City of Adelaide and is supported by the Government of South Australia.
