South Australia nominees announced for 60th anniversary of the Australian of the Year Awards

SA Nominees Australian of the Year Awards

 

The nominees for the 2020 SA Australian of the Year Awards include a tuna-poler turned industry leader, a literacy advocate, a retired school principal and a fundraising tyre-flipper.

They are among 16 South Australians in the running to be named the state’s Local Hero, Young Australian, Senior Australian or Australian of the Year as the nation celebrates the 60th anniversary of the awards.
The 2020 South Australia award nominees are:

2020 SA Australian of the Year
Gabrielle Kelly – Wellbeing advocate, digital pioneer and filmmaker 
Dr Sandra Marshall – Literacy advocate 
Dr James Muecke AM – Eye surgeon and blindness prevention pioneer 
Michael O’Connell AM – Advocate for victims of crime and terrorism

2020 SA Senior Australian of the Year
Angelique Boileau – Business owner, innovator and philanthropist
Peter Francis – Retired school principal and volunteer 
Sylvia McMillan – Volunteer
Dr Hagen Stehr AO – Australian seafood industry leader

2020 SA Young Australian of the Year
Gabriel Erjok Akon – Poet, activist and mentor 
Zibeon Fielding – Runner, cyclist and fundraiser
Ben Rowe – Founder, Streetlight Community
Corporal Matthew Williams – Fundraiser for brain cancer

2020 SA Local Hero
Emmah Evans – Cystic Fibrosis advocate
Jolyn Phillipps – Founder, Lion Hearts Learning 
Eman Rahim – Founder, Heart & Soul Group
Mark Thomas – Logistics officer and ex-volunteer, Operation Flinders

The nominees are among 128 people being recognised across all states and territories as part of the program, which began in 1960.
The four award recipients from South Australia will be announced on the evening of Wednesday 6 November 2019 in a ceremony at Adelaide Oval.

They will then join the other state and territory recipients for the national awards ceremony at the National Arboretum in Canberra on 25 January 2020.

The 2020 South Australia nominees cover such a diverse spectrum of contribution, causes and commitments – the many ways in which people are making a difference in our communities is astounding.
