Lord Mayor of Adelaide- Australia Day

Ninna marni (hello).

In the City of Adelaide, we are truly lucky. We enjoy a lifestyle that many around the world and nation can only dream about.

On Australia Day the City of Adelaide celebrates our nation’s diversity, our successful mix of cultures and the unity of our community spirit.

The annual Australia Day Parade attracts in excess of 3,500 participants from more than 100 community groups, a captivating display of colour, culture and pride, with tens of thousands of people lining the streets to cheer them on.

The huge gathering of families in Tarntanya (Elder Park) unites us all in a common bond of pride in what it means to be an Australian.

On Australia Day we acknowledge, remember and recognise Australian Aboriginal people who have contributed to our community, and those of which who are leading the way for our younger generations to follow.

I encourage families to join the morning Australia Day Smoking Ceremony at 7am in Tarntanya (Elder Park) which will involve a Welcome to Country led by Uncle Fred Agius and Uncle Major 'Moogy' Sumner as well as performances by the Iwiri Choir.

Australia Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the many fine people from so many different walks of life who have made contributions to Australia.

I am a proud Australian, privileged to live in a fair and just society, where diversity is celebrated and encouraged.

Here’s to an excellent 2020.

Nakutha (see you soon)
